Ketoconazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent used in the prevention and treatment of a variety of fungal infections, It functions by preventing the synthesis of ergosterol which is a vital component of fungal cell membranes thereby increasing membrane fluidity and preventing the growth of the fungus that contribute to dandruff. 

 

Zinc Pyrithione, the other active ingredient has antifungal properties and it functions by increasing the cellular levels of copper and damaging iron-sulfur clusters of proteins essential for fungal metabolism and growth. It also reduces flaking and itching caused by dandruff.
